Origin Energy moves into the broadband space

Power company Origin Energy has added ADSL and NBN plans to its product range, becoming the third Australian company we know about to offer both energy and broadband services.

Origin broadband will offer a choice of plans on both ADSL and NBN. Each will come with unlimited data and will be priced between $65 and $110 per month. Customers will be able to choose between 12 or 24 month contracts and a no-contract option will also be available. All four NBN speeds will be available.

Customers choosing a 24 month plan will receive a free modem (plus $10 delivery fee) plus zero activation fee. Customers choosing a 12 month contract will have to pay $49 for their modem plus $59 to activate their service. Customers on a no-contract plan will pay $89 for their modem and $80 to activate their service. Home calls are not included on any plan but can be added for an extra fee or are available PAYG with ADSL service.

This news is the latest development in what appears to be a growing trend towards energy companies offering home internet services, and vice versa. Earlier this year electricity and gas provider Sumo also made the leap to broadband, adding NBN plans to its product range. Meanwhile, once mobile-only provider amaysim has now added both NBN and home energy to its portfolio.

Check out how both amaysim and Sumo NBN plans stack up below:

While at first glance the two services may seem like a strange mix, we can see the appeal of getting power, gas and internet from a one-stop-shop. Origin Energy Head of Retail, Jon Briskin, confirms convenience for customers as a reason for the add-on.

“With Origin Broadband, customers will benefit from being able to easily organise their energy and broadband with one call when they move home and are time poor.”

As well as broadband, Origin also sells electricity, natural gas, solar, LPG and smart home solutions.
